Learn how to set up the MT3-12x40MAOL scope and choose red, green, or blue illumination for your conditions. Includes eye relief tips, battery saving, and mil-dot holdover basics.

Quick answer

Mount the MT3-12x40MAOL scope with proper eye relief, zero it at your chosen distance, and then use the red, green, or blue illumination only when the background makes the black reticle hard to see. Start at the lowest brightness that gives contrast, and turn it off when you're done to save battery.

Why illumination isn't always on

The MT3-12x40MAOL has a red, green, and blue illuminated Mil-Dot reticle. That gives you options, but the goal is contrast, not color preference. Illumination helps most against dark backgrounds—heavy timber, shadowed brush, or a black target—and can actually wash out a light background if set too bright. Use the lowest setting that makes the reticle stand out, and turn it off when conditions don't require it. Battery life depends on brightness level and how long you leave it on, so treat illumination as a tool you switch on for the shot, not a setting you leave running all day.

Eye relief and the 12x trade-off

The scope has 4 inches of eye relief and a 1-inch tube. That eye relief is workable on many rifles, but at 12x you'll notice a narrower exit pupil (3.6 mm) and a tighter eye box than at 3x. Mount the scope so you get a full, shadow-free view at 12x before you tighten the rings. If you have to creep forward to see clearly, move the scope back; if you're too close, move it forward. Don't set eye relief at 3x and assume it will be fine at 12x—check at the highest magnification you plan to use.

Mil-dot holdover: keep it simple

The Mil-Dot reticle lets you hold over for distance and wind without dialing. The scope's turrets adjust in 1/2 MOA clicks at 100 yards, so you can zero at your preferred distance and then use the dots for longer shots. You don't need to be a mil-dot expert to start: learn what your zero distance is, then practice holding the appropriate dot for targets beyond that distance. Keep a simple dope card or notes for your load, and verify at the range rather than guessing. The reticle is a measuring tool, but it only works if you know your zero and have practiced the holds.

Step-by-step setup and use

  1. Mount with eye relief set at 12x: Install the scope in rings and set eye relief while the scope is on 12x. Slide it forward or back until you get a full, clear view without straining. Tighten rings evenly. Check eye relief again after tightening—rings can shift the scope slightly.
  2. Zero at your chosen distance: Start at 25 or 50 yards to get on paper, then move to your zero distance. Use the 1/2 MOA clicks to adjust windage and elevation. Fire groups and adjust until point of impact matches point of aim. Don't chase a single shot—use a group to confirm zero.
  3. Choose illumination only when needed: Turn on illumination when the black reticle blends into a dark target or background. Start at the lowest brightness and increase only if needed. Try red first for most dark backgrounds; green can help in some lighting; blue is often best for very low light without washing out your night vision. If the target is light-colored, leave illumination off to avoid glare.
  4. Practice mil-dot holds: After zeroing, set up targets at known distances beyond your zero. Use the dots to hold over and record which dot corresponds to which distance. Verify with live fire. Keep a simple dope card in your range bag so you don't have to remember holds.
  5. Manage battery use: Turn illumination off when you're not actively aiming. If the scope will sit for long periods, remove the battery. Carry a spare battery if you rely on illumination for low-light hunting. Test the illumination before you head out—don't assume it will work after months in storage.
